Description:

The University of Illinois offers its students two field site programs with locations in Italy: Participants in the Verona Studies program enjoy an immersive experience designed to provide an authentic understanding of contemporary Italian society. Classes are held at Centro Studi IDEA Verona, a language institute specifically designed to teach Italian to international students. During the initial month of the semester term, students focus on language skill development in entry- to advanced-level Italian classes, thereafter adding electives such as Art History, Photography, Italian literature, and Italian Opera. Students participating in the semester-long term may enroll in between 12-18 credit hours of coursework. Participants in the six-week summer program add one of two available electives to the Italian 101 course, for a total of seven credit hours. Service-learning placements within the health care industry, with non-profit organizations such as UNICEF, and internships in conjunction with the annual Opera Festival at the Arena provide additional opportunities for language and cultural immersion. The sixteen-credit-hour Food and Culture in Rome program is designed to provide students with a unique opportunity to learn about the culture, production, preparation, and on-site marketing of Italian food and wine in the heart of Italy. The program curriculum focuses on the study of regional cuisine and its ingredients, architecture and the history of art, politics and social dynamics, as well as the language and culture of Italian literature. In-class lessons are combined with guided visits within the city of Rome, meetings with subject-area experts, excursions outside of Rome, and hands-on classes in the kitchen. Lecture topics include, but are not limited to, the international success of the Mediterranean eating habits, food trends, and gender issues. Students are introduced to strategies and practical skills for food and wine communication and documentary narration through exposure to different media and technologies, guided visits to television studios, and the creation of online blogs.
